ISRO’s Top 5 Achievements in Space Exploration

1. Launching 104 Satellites – 2017

In a remarkable feat, ISRO achieved a milestone by launching 104 satellites with a single rocket in 2017. This achievement showcased ISRO’s capability to efficiently handle multiple satellites from six different countries using the PSLV-C37 rocket. On February 15, 2017, ISRO set a new world record by deploying 104 satellites in a single mission, surpassing the previous record of 37 satellites.

2. Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) – 2014

India’s Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, marked a significant milestone in space exploration. Launched in 2013, MOM successfully entered Mars’ orbit on September 24, 2014. This mission demonstrated ISRO’s ability to reach Mars and conduct scientific research, including studying the Martian atmosphere and terrain. It made India the first Asian country to reach Martian orbit and the fourth space agency globally to do so.

3. Chandrayaan-1 – 2008

Launched in 1975, Aryabhata performed X-ray astronomy and atmospheric studies. It marked India’s debut in space exploration, displaying ISRO’s capacity to create, construct, and send a satellite for scientific investigation.

5. Vikas Engine – 1970

The Vikas engine, a powerful and reliable liquid rocket engine developed by ISRO, has played a crucial role in India’s space program. Designed in the 1970s, it powers various launch vehicles, including the PSLV and GSLV. Planned missions

Here are the key planned missions by ISRO


Expected launch on 26 August 2023. A solar observatory mission to study the solar corona and chromosphere using a solar coronagraph and near UV instrument.

X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat)

Planned for 2023. A space observatory to study polarization of cosmic X-rays. It will focus on studying various cosmic sources like pulsars, black hole X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, and non-thermal supernova remnants.

Gaganyaan 1

Mid-2023 launch. An uncrewed spacecraft flight test as part of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme. The spacecraft is designed to carry three people and is intended to be India’s first crewed mission.

Gaganyaan 2

Planned for 2023–2024. The second uncrewed spacecraft flight test as a precursor to India’s first crewed mission.


Expected launch in January 2024. A joint project between NASA and ISRO for a synthetic aperture radar satellite aimed at remote sensing, notable for its dual-frequency imaging capability.


Scheduled for December 2024. A planned Venus orbiter mission by ISRO to study the atmosphere of Venus.

Mangalyaan 2

Expected launch in 2024. India’s second interplanetary mission to Mars, consisting of an orbiter to study the Red Planet.

Gaganyaan 3

Projected for 2025. India’s first crewed Gaganyaan mission, aiming to make India the fourth country to send humans into space independently.

Lunar Polar Exploration Mission

Planned for 2026-28. A joint concept mission by JAXA and ISRO to explore the south pole region of the Moon. The mission is under discussion for funding and planning.


To be determined. A proposed space telescope, successor to Astrosat-1, aimed at enhancing India’s capabilities in astronomy and astrophysics research.
